Cooling and washing in a scrubber by spraying water

Company: JSW Steel Ltd , India

gascooling

Jindal Steel is the second biggest producer of steel in India, the plant is located near Bangalore. JSW Steel Ltd. consists of the most modern, eco-friendly steel plants with the latest technologies for both upstream & downstream processes.
There are various process where heat has to be reduced or as in this case gas has to be cooled. The cooling of the gas is done by spraying water insdie the process.
The water itself is sprayed inside by a row of nozzles. These nozzles tend to very heavy scaling. The temperature of the gas reaches several hundred degrees, which forces a lot of water to evaporate just when coming inside the process.  The design value of the loop is a flow of 380m3/h. Over the time  the flow has been reduced to app. 250m3/hour. This water flow is not sufficient for the process, so regular cleaning has

to be done. As this is a very critical part of the plant, the production have to be stopped in order to do so. Merus was installed just in the feed line of this process, just after the pumps. This issue was to keep the flow and pressure of the cooling water stable.
After installing Merus, it can be easily seen at the table below, the flow increased constant, from less then 300 m3/h to today more then 330m3/h. This only could happen due to less scale in the pipes, but most improtant due to clean nozzles inside the process. Along the increase of the flow the pressure declined in the same relation. It is to be expected over time the flow will reach the design value of this process.
Another very interesting finding has been that the amount of dust inside the gas has been reduced a lot. This value is limited to 5mg/m3 by the authorities. This value has always been at the limit, and since using Merus it is ok.
